He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly play against each other. Howard had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice.
