Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease.
